Your car’s alternator converts the mechanical energy that your engine produces and transforms it into electrical energy for your battery. The battery then powers all the electrical systems of your vehicle. If your alternator is not working properly, your car battery will not charge and will not be able to power your vehicle’s electrical system. So, you keep an eye on your alternator and make sure it is replaced when it is at the end of its useful life. Here are some signs that you need a new alternator:

• Engine Stalling: If your alternator fails while you are driving, your engine may stall. Jump-starting your car may get your car running again, but not for long. Typically, a battery light will turn on in your vehicle’s dash. Do not continue to drive after your vehicle has stalled as it will stall again. You should visit your local auto repair shop immediately for diagnostics and repairs.

• Battery Light is On: This is a clear sign that there is an issue with your battery and/or alternator. The battery light may also come on because of wiring issues, a faulty voltage regulator, a worn drive belt, or a parasitic drain.

• Dim Lights: This happens when your battery does not have enough power to your lights fully. This can be caused by a faulty battery or malfunctioning alternator. Either way, you should get your vehicle checked.

• Dead Battery: Dead batteries happen all the time. It may be because you left the radio or interior lights on. It may also be an indication of a faulty alternator.

• Burning Smell Coming from the Engine: A burning smell can be caused by the alternator or drive belt. You may also be low on oil. This is always a concern that needs to be addressed quickly.
